CHAMPAIGN COUNTY

PUBLIC SAFETY COMMAND CENTER

he Champaign County Public Safety Command Post brings many advanced emergency management tools to the scene of any type of public safety emergency or incident. Examples of the possible uses of this vehicle include, but are not limited to, major fires, natural disasters (tornado, flood, etc.), man made disasters (hazardous materials incidents, etc.) 91-1 center backup, civil unrest, tactical operations as well as command post operations for events such as the Fourth of July.

Lynch Diversified Vehicles (LDV) of Burrlington, Wisconsin manufactured the vehicle, bringing a 1999 Freightliner chassis and Grumman body together. Working with Champaign County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, LDV custom designed and built the vehicle to our exact specifications.

Five dispatch workstations are available for staff to perform necessary functions to support the situation. Communications capability includes ten two-way radios to support communications needs on nearly all public safety (police, fire, EMS and EMA) frequencies. An on-board PBX phone system incorporates three fixed digital cellular telephones and makes these devices available to each of the eight telephone instruments installed inside the vehicle and two external-mounted telephone instruments. When normal telephone facilities are accessible, the PBX system can be served by up to six standard telephone lines. An on-board FAX machine can send and receive faxes over cellular telephone or standard phone line, whichever is available.

Electrical power can be provided through "shore" lines connected to

standard electrical service or via an on-board 15-Kilowatt generator. Under full load, the generator will run about twelve hours with the on-board fuel supply. Electrical power provided via either method is converted to 12 volts DC to provide power to the radios and other vehicle systems.
